The State government had announced in its Budget this year that Peenya Industrial Area, apart from Bomma-sandra Industrial Area, and three others outside Bengaluru will be provided “industrial township authority” status.

However, it appears that not much has moved from the drawing board till date. “We had widely welcomed the announcement of notifying Peenya Industrial Area as an industrial township,” PIA President Sri Krishnamurthy observed, “It is learnt that the government is contemplating whether a separate framework should be drafted for functioning of industrial townships. As Asia’s largest industrial zone, Peenya Industrial Area has a pre-eminent status and the government should expedite the formalities involved in converting it into a township authority, as this would give it a fair amount of autonomy which would go a long way in improving the maintaining the amenities and industrial infrastructure.”

The PIA President also pointed out that as per the 74th amendment to the Constitution, once given township authority status, Peenya Industrial Area would be excluded from the jurisdiction of BBMP, which would inject a much needed freedom for the industries themselves to maintain the infrastructure on their own.
