Air quality monitor at Peenya reports dip in pollution levels

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]With the entire Phase 1 of Bengaluru Metro becoming operational, a study by the Karnataka State Pollution Control Board, through six air quality monitoring stations (three in the metro corridor) has reported a dip in the pollution levels.

The pollution levels dipped 13.9% along the Nayandahalli-Bayyappanahalli route and 8.9% along the Yelachenahalli-Nagasandra route. The dip in pollution levels was significant compare to the data for 2017 an 2016.

The monitoring stations showed a dip in air pollutants Nitrogen dioxide (NO2) and particulate matter (PM10 and PM 2.5). Particulate matter less than 2.5 microns comprising fine dust matter is the most dangerous air pollutant and can cause tremendous breathing problems in adults, said an official.

[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]The Peenya Industrial Area, Yeshwantpur Police station, City railway station, UVCE at K R Circle along the North-South Corridor, AMCO Batteries at Mysore Road and Victoria Hospital at K R Market are the places where these monitoring stations are located.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/2″][vc_column_text][/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/2″][vc_column_text]Responding to this report, the Bengaluru Metro Rail Corporation Limited Managing Director Mahendra Jain attributed the dip in pollution levels to more and more commuters choosing Metro over road vehicles.

The levels of individual pollutants at Peenya Metro Station area are:

• Nitrogen dioxide: 4.5%
• Particulate Matter  10 (PM_10): 20.2%
• Particulate Matter 2.5 (PM_2.5):  11.1%

Bengaluru Metro sources say that with the commissioning of Phase II and route planned for Phase III, more people will commute by Metro, thus bringing down the pollution levels further.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
